I just heard from Diane Rossi, Co-chair of the Joe's Pond Ice-Out, that a group of ice fishers told her this morning that they think the ice is between six and eight inches thick. That isn't a lot for January, but we haven't had a lot of really cold weather. This snow cover will insulate it, too, so unless we get an extended period of below-zero weather, I'm guessing this may be one of those years when the ice doesn't get very thick. That doesn't necessarily mean the ice will go out earlier than normal - that will depend on the temperatures in March and April. It is good to get a reading this early, though, and we'll try to keep everyone posted as time goes on. The flag won't be set up right away - probably not until sometime in March, depending on what the weather is and when Larry can get onto the ice to do it. He is not about to do it when there's a blizzard going on!
Thanks for your report, Diane.
P.S. - I nearly forgot to mention - the people fishing were getting some nice perch!
