We had the first ice shanty in the bay today. It was a portable tent not too far from Wechsler's. It had been taken down before the sun set. The vehicle they came in was parked in the access area. After dark tonight there was a car shining its lights on the lake and someone walking out on the Ice a bit.
I'm not surprised the fishermen are anxious to get out there! With the deep cold weather we've had, the ice is likely safe in most places, but still - I would not be comfortable going out there just yet.
I had some good information on the fire years ago that I mentioned here recently. Jane Milne was there when it happened, and filled in some details. The Casslani's owned it at the time, but the cottage had belonged to Carl Hovey, who owned Hovey's Shops in St. Johnsbury. Like many cottages back then, it had a name - "Brown Betty." We haven't a clue why that name, but I'm sure there was a story there. Jane remembered that the Wheaton camp was named something that sounded like, "Quit Your Belly-Aching" - just another quirky name among many others.
Thanks to Jane and also Andy Rudin for helping out with these questions. I'll have more questions for you here soon. In the meantime, here are two photos I have not been able to identify. I hope someone will recognize these cottages.
