Really a quiet day here today. We decided to try out the Village Restaurant in Hardwick - it used to be the Hardwick Diner, on the corner by the light where Route 15 swings towards Wolcott and Morrisville. It was pretty busy all the time we were there, although we purposely avoided the regular lunch rush and arrived at about 1 o'clock. The choices were so numerous it was difficult to decide. The waitress said, "Really, you can have anything you want." I took her up on that and asked for an open-faced roast beef sandwich with just meat and gravy on white bread (I know, unhealthy as all get out, but that was my favorite as a little girl when we went to the Willoughby Diner in St. Johnsbury). For some reason, I thought about that a few days ago and this seemed like a good time to try a trip down memory lane. It was very close to what I remembered, and definitely "special ordered" as there was nothing like it on the menu. Fred had chicken and biscuits. I know - not exactly "lunch" fare for either of us! He said it was excellent.

When it came time for dessert, there were so many choices we had a hard time deciding. We finally decided to get dessert "to go" and brought it home with us, just so we could sample to see if their desserts were as good as their entrees. We agreed that while the banana creme pie was very good, it wasn't exceptional, and the same for the carrot cake. That said, I've had desserts I was much more disappointed in, and it wouldn't keep me from going back there. Next time we may just omit dessert - or not. There were some other very nice possibilities . . . !

I was interested that here at our house there was no icing on the trees at all, but just a mile or so away on Brickett's Crossing Road, the trees and bushes were white with ice and there was a lot of fog on our way back, too. It snowed a little while we were in Hardwick, but the roads were fine and traffic was moving well.

I expect supper tonight will be a light one. We sort of overdid the food bit at noon. It was fun, though. Have to get in training for Thanksgiving, right?
