Here are some reminders about boating regulations in Vermont. It has come to our attention that wake boats are becoming more prevalent on Joe's Pond, and this is an increasing problem. Our pond is relatively small and much of the shoreline is natural and therefore fragile. Also, there are numerous docks with boats tied alongside that can be damaged by the wake of these specialized boats or any boat "plowing" through the water close to shore creating a wake. This pond is really too small for that type of boat to operate without doing damage on shore.
We recently had a complaint about a boat out on the water with loud music at 2 a.m. Please be considerate of others when you are out on the water. There are also state regulations about noise level, so please keep this in mind.
Below are some ways you could be breaking the law as well as being inconsiderate:
Unlawful Operation
Vermont law states that these dangerous operating practices are illegal:
■Careless and Reckless Operation of a vessel or the reckless manipulation of water skis, a surfboard, or a similar device is operating in a manner that causes danger to the life, limb, or property of any person. Examples of illegal, reckless operation are:
•Boating in restricted areas without regard for other boaters or persons, posted speeds and wake restrictions, diver-down flags, etc.
•Boating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs•Failing to follow the navigation rules shown on pages8-9
•We a v i n g t h rough congested waterway traffic
•Swerving at the last possible moment in order to avoid collision
•Causing danger or damage from the wake of your vessel
•Chasing, harassing, or disturbing wildlife with your vessel
■Overloading is loading the vessel beyond a safe carrying capacity, taking into consideration the weather and other operating conditions.
This is going to be a busy weekend - and a busy summer here at Joe's Pond, so enjoy being here, but also please don't spoil the enjoyment of others by unnecessary, thoughtless activities.
So far, the comments about the Wednesday night fireworks are all positive. I have had several responses and everyone agrees the display was very good - some said best ever at Joe's Pond. The finale was especially impressive. Thanks to everyone who responded.
Don't forget that the Joe's Pond Association Annual Meeting is at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday). All are welcome.
If you haven't paid your annual dues ($40) now is the time! Pay at the meeting, or you can still pay on line or mail your check to: Joe's Pond Association, P. O. Box 111, West Danville VT 05873.
Ice-Out tickets will be available at the meeting and you can also pick up your new Joe's Pond directory. See you there!
