Some people in our area are familiar with the big contest in Alaska called the"Nenana Ice Classic."  It is similar to ours, only has been going since 1917, and there are far more tickets sold making the prize much, much larger than ours here at Joe's Pond.

Homer Fitts has a friend up there who is an official for that big game.  Today we had a call from Homer letting us know about an article in Wednesday's Caledonian Record about the Nenana Ice Classic winner for this year.  Turns out, the guy is not only this year's winner, but he has won twice before!!  Here's the story:  Drilling His Own River Ice Pays Off
I have to wonder how safe that river ice is for anyone to be out there drilling holes.  I guess it depends on how keen one is about winning.

Thanks to Homer for alerting us to this story - I'm afraid I had missed it completely when I read the paper last night.  I guess I was concentrating on American Idol - and yes, I'm hooked on that contest again this year.  I didn't watch for a long time, but then got interested again mid-way last year, but this season have watched the contest from the start, but not the auditions - they are just too silly.

Speaking of Ice-Out contests, we've ordered the 2013 tickets, so they should be available at our first meeting on May 26.

I was looking at the page on our website that lists cottages for sale.  There are an extraordinary number right now.  I expect it's a backlog that has built up because for the last couple of years no properties have sold on the pond.  Only a few years ago, it was rare that a cottage was on the market for more than a few weeks; but as far as I know, not one has been sold during the past year, and some have been on the market longer than a year.  Lives keep changing, making it necessary to make big adjustments, and it is almost always a very difficult decision to give up a Joe's Pond home.  We're always sorry when long-time friends find it necessary to make that kind of change, but we understand, and know someone else will join the community eventually and will appreciate all Joe's Pond has to offer.

I've been watching the wild cherry tree in our back yard today.  I swear the buds have begun to open almost as I watched.  This morning I didn't notice any white at all - and now I'm seeing a dozen or more white dots indicating the buds are opening.   That is one of those good-news-bad-news situations:  the good news is that the tree will be beautiful and smell great; the bad news is that it's blossoms signal it's black fly season.  Don't ask me to explain the connection - it's just the way it is.  It's tradition.

This week turned out to be a doozie for me. I had anticipated going for a follow-up on my knee on Monday, but instead ended up in the ER at ...
