Today has been another spring-like day but not quite as warm as it was yesterday. Even with the rain yesterday, we still have a good coating of snow. I was surprised we didn't lose more. Fred went to West Danville for me today and got some pictures. This top one is of Harrington's antiques place at the end of the bridge going west out of West Danville. That's not snow in the air - it's a spattered window - but you can see there is still plenty of snow on the roadsides.

There is no sign of the pond breaking up yet. This is a shot of the first pond, right in West Danville, where the water flows under the bridge and over the dam. This is where the pond usually shows the first signs of opening.

The weather turned cold last night and the rain turned to snow, so we had two inches of new snow to help insulate the ice against today's warm air and sunshine. I expect we may still be making ice, not melting it, at least for a few
more days.
I haven't heard how thick the ice is now, but at last report it was at least two feet thick.

Fred stopped at the fishing access and got these two pictures. The fishing has been very good this year and they still have a little over two weeks left before the shanties have to be off the ice - on the 25th.

There's a regular road plowed out onto the ice, and no
real signs of melting going on yet.

I want to remind you that Blanche Lamore will be on TV tonight as a "Super Senior" on WCAX's 6 o'clock news. Blanche was honored for her many years serving at town meetings. She will be 100 years old on May 26th. She may have slowed a bit, but she's still pretty sprightly and has more energy at almost 100 than lots of folks have at half her age. She keeps up with things, too, and although her
hand shakes a bit and she doesn't see quite as well as she used to, her years of walking trap lines, fishing, berry picking and gardening have kept her young. She still likes to ice fish - in fact, she does all those things I mentioned except for setting trap lines. She tells of doctoring with skunk oil and using rotted fish for trap bait. These days she makes quilts and crochets, still makes pies and doughnuts, and goes to church and out to eat or to meetings whenever she can get a ride. She's always been a very tiny, delicate looking woman; but nobody who knows her doubts her strength and resolve.
