Tuesday June 15th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm

Book Talk by author Woden Teachout

June 14th is Flag Day. This year we will celebrate Flag Day on June 15th with a book talk given by author Woden Teachout on her book, Capture the Flag. The American flag has played a lively – and often decisive – role in our political life for well over a century. It has been waved by citizens across the political spectrum: left and right, racists and revolutionaries, nativists and civil rights organizers. It has been hoisted, waved, burned, and trampled underfoot. Historian, Woden Teachout will talk about how the flag developed into such a potent symbol and how activists and politicians have struggled over its meaning, each hoping to call on its power to express his or her version of the American dream.

We noticed the Sandy Beach Road sign is repaired and back in place. It was hit by a pickup truck soon after it was put out this spring and damaged quite badly. It has been set back from the road and I believe Ray Rouleau is going to have some large stones set in front of it to try to prevent this happening again. That sign is a magnet for "accidents". . .

Pam Hebert told me there's been a bear in the vicinity of Larry Rossi's on Otis Drive recently. I guess they're still hungry and looking for an easy meal. It's a good reminder to keep things such as bird feeders, garbage cans and barbeque grills locked up and out of reach. I had a mysterious visitor a couple nights ago that dug up my window boxes and left muddy footprints on the deck railing. I suspect a raccoon, but I can't imagine what attracted him to dig in the flower boxes. Maybe there were some grubs or worms in there - who knows?

We took a quick trip to Walmart in Woodsville on Saturday. It was busier than usual there, we thought. We haven't been there often - it seems further than going to Littleton, but it really isn't that much further. On the way back we stopped for gas at Marty's and there was a pickup parked there with two sheep in a cage - the black one was quite a bit smaller than the white one, but they were curious about everyone who went by and were very well behaved.

Today was a beautiful day but unfortunately both Fred and I had a lot of work to do inside so we didn't get out for very long. We went down to camp for a little while on Saturday, so caught up with everyone. Jamie is putting the finishing touches on "Raja" - the dear old inboard, and Bob was pleased he'd been able to replace the faucets on our old (very old) sink in the bathroom. It was so old the screws on the faucets seized and had to be drilled out so Bob was prepared to replace the whole thing but found what he needed at Appalachian Supply in St. Johnsbury, so it's good to go now. Bill and family weren't there on Saturday and we didn't get down again today, so we haven't an update on what they're doing. All are hoping the weather pattern changes soon so weekends are better than they have been. We've had about enough rain for a while . . .
