Things have quieted - hardly any phone calls this afternoon and I've been able to do some catch-up work. One of the things I wanted to pass on to you was sent to me by Patricia Luneau (Point Comfort Road):

Brian Denny, son of Dr. Rob and Florence Denny had a accident at work on Mar. 15th. His C-3 C4 [vertebrae] were injuried drastically. His address is:
Brian Denny
c/o Shepherd Center Rm518
2020 Peachtree Road NW
Atlanta, GA 30309-1465

There is a website to go to called CARINGBRIDGE. It has his journal and a place for guests to write. The web address is www.caringbridge.org/visit/briandenny
This is a great site and I know Brian, his wife Jessica, Rob and Florence feel the love and support through this. There are also T-shirts to buy called "Team Denny" and also bumper stickers. People who buy t-shirts will take pictures wearing it and Brian will be surprised with a collage of all who have supported him. The e-mail address for this is: Teambriandenny@gmail.org.

This is just one small way we here at Joe's can show our support.
Thank you,
Patrice Luneau

We were very saddened to learn of this tragedy facing one of our Joe's Pond family. Patrice will be at our spring meeting and hopes there may be more that Joe's Ponders can do to help. Rob and Florence Denny are long-time summer residents here at the pond and our thoughts and prayers are certainly with them.

We've had some questions this year concerning the Ice-Out Contest clock being stopped but the flag still flying. This has been particularly perplexing to some folks because this is the second year in a row it has happened. I asked Homer Fitts about this, and this was his reply:

YES, IT HAS GONE BY FLOATING OR MOVING ICE MANY TIMES. IN FACT HAS MOVED AS MUCH AS 100 YARDS.

I also asked Don Walker, who, like Homer, has been associated with our Ice-Out contest for many years, and he agreed. I'm thinking perhaps there should be a record kept of the circumstances surrounding the clock stopping each year. Homer has a pile of clippings that I might borrow and in that way chronicle past Ice-Outs.

There is an interesting chart or graph that Fred has just made available from home page. Henretta Splain sent it to us after her friend in NYC, a computer modeler, statistician and scientist, used the statistics from our web site page of Ice-Out Contest dates to compile it. We found it very interesting and asked for permission to post it with the Ice-Out pages. You'll find a quick link on the menu panel at the left of home page under "Ice Out Trend."

I thought the following was interesting, too. This makes our clock setup seem pretty unsophisticated. Thanks to Bill Rossi for sending this. Click to see how they do it in Alaska.

Catching Up

As our lovely autumn days begin to turn a bit chill and dreary - the transition from October to November is like that  - I want to share so...
