It turned out to be a quiet evening here at Joe's Pond. The fireworks were rained out, and although it rained quite hard at times this afternoon, we never did get the violent thunderstorms that were warned. Mid-afternoon brought word from Don Sherwood that we would know by 6 o'clock whether the fireworks would be a "go" or not. A little after 5 o'clock I got word that the decision had been made to cancel the fireworks and have them on our rain date, Saturday. Don worried whether it was the right decision, but we put the word out, knowing it could go either way. Almost on cue, just before six o'clock, the sun came out! We all thought, "Ah-ha!" but within a few minutes the clouds were coming down the valley again and there were more rain showers. Sometimes things just work out for the best! Good call, Don! We'll hope the weatherman is right about Saturday being a nice day.

Fred and I were at the post office yesterday. We met Alberta (Davidson) Cochran there. I had
known Alberta's parents, Albert "Cub" and Leona Davidson, but had only spoken to Alberta on the phone. Leona grew up in Cabot and was a great source of information for me when we were writing the Cabot oral history in 1999. I was pleased to actually meet Alberta. Jane Larrabee was showing us the album of old photographs she has on display at the store, asking us to look through and try to identify any we could. I didn't have time to do it then, but will plan to take some time soon and go through the book.

We spent most of yesterday afternoon at the Ca
bot Historical Society building. We put together a DVD of all the photos I've been working on for the past couple of years (about 700 on this DVD), and needed to be sure there was a way to play it at for people while the museum is open tomorrow, the Fourth. Peter and Bonnie Dannenberg had a TV and DVD player - all that was needed was for it to be set up. It took lots of time and finagling, but Peter and Fred got it to work, so it will be playing tomorrow. We're hoping someone will be able to identify some of the people in the pictures we have not been able to name.

While we were there, Erma Perry and Roberta Bothfeld stopped by and left off a pile of documents and pictures - more for me to scan and file. There was a wonderful album of postcards, and lots of family pictures of the Oscar Walters family. Oscar owned the store at Walden Heights for many years, and his daughter, Beverly, was a classmate of mine. Beverly died a couple of years ago and her family wanted the historical society to have the pictures. Some of the pictures will be shared with Walden and perhaps other surrounding towns. They are very nice, but unfortunately, many are not identified. Beverly had a brother, Bernard, who was drowned about 1949 or 1950 while diving from a raft that was anchored just off where our Recreation Area dock is now.

Subject: June E coli data for Joes Public Beach

Hi Jill and Mert,

I thought with the busy weekend coming up, you folks might like to see June’s E. coli readings for the beach. Again, very low numbers and things are looking good. I sampled this morning, so Mert, if you don’t get a call tomorrow then that means we haven’t got an exceedance and you don’t need to close the beach to swimming for 4th of July weekend!

Again, the readings this year are very low. (Click on image to enlarge.)
