This is a recent message from Evelyn Richer down on Sandy Beach Road at Joe's Pond. We posted pictures earlier of the building going on down there, and here's an update: "They moved the modular sections of Rachel Lewis' house in (old Hardy camp), but they are not placed yet. They brought them in late at night, after dark, from PA and got one of the tractor trailer trucks stuck. Then the other one showed up with the other half of the house, so we had the two house halves, two tractor trailer trucks, three cars, and two pick-ups in the culdesac, then we had to call the wrecker which was HUGE because one of the big trucks was jack-knifed!"
"The pictures weretaken the following afternoon. Mathews Construction is moving the second house half - it took him only minutes to get it off the road where it had been wedged up against our mailbox when all the traffic left the night before and guide it down the driveway onto Rachel's lot. As you can see, it was snowing, but with the right operator and equipment, everything went smoothly." (A special thankyou to Ray and Evelyn Richer for sending me these photos).

We have a few serious news items to pass on to Joe's Ponders and friends of the web site.
Sadly, Sherry LaPrade's mother, Marie K. Magne, 81, passed away in Florida on January 18, 2006. Sherry is presently with her family in Florida, but will be back at Joe's Pond soon. Marie leaves her husband of 61 years, Henry "Joe" Magne, a son, two daughters, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Our sympathy goes out to Sherry and her family.
We just learned this morning that Don Walker, that energetic golfer/swimmer/tennis player/ game time-keeper and long-time resident of Montpelier, Vermont and Joe's Pond, collapsed last week on the tennis court. I spoke with him this morning and he is upbeat and feeling well, but will go into Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH on Friday for open-heart surgery to repair a faulty valve. He expects to be at DHMC for about a week, and then will recouperate at home under Audrey's watchful eye. I'm sure Don will be back on the courts and links soon, and will be taking his usual daily plunges (regardless of the temperature or weather) into Joe's Pond. We'll keep you posted on his progress as he recovers.
Don't forget to get your Ice-Out tickets in before April 1st. Many have already been returned, some without adequate information, and a few without any money. We'll try to get in touch with as many as possible to be sure your ticket(s) will be in the contest, but the best way to insure that is to have all necessary information AND the correct amount of money included - $1.00 per ticket! If you don't wish to enter the contest, it would be helpful if you simply send back the unused tickets so we can sell them to someone else. Ice-Out tickets or requests for information should be sent to: Joe's Pond Association, PO Box 111, West Danville VT 05873.

Here is a new web site you should visit, www.stjkauction.com. The St. Johnsbury Kiwanis Auction is coming up soon and you won't want to miss the fun. The list of items to be auctioned will be in the March 18 issue of The Caledonian Record and you can follow the auction action on KATV Channel 7, WYKR-FM 101.3 and WSTJ-AM 1340 radio. Lots of fun and for a good cause.

Our weather has changed from spring-like to more typically January blizzard. Windy and snowing tonight and the temperature is slipping downward rapidly. This means there will be a slowdown of water running into the lake and, hopefully, the "rubber dam" will operate as advertised and keep the level within reasonable limits. So far it's been pretty good - water is high, but not flooding as it has done in the past.
Skiing has been ruined, but with six to twelve inches of snow coming tonight and tomorrow, it should be great - perhaps even saving the day so at least the end of the long weekend could offer some really good snow at Burke Mountain and surrounding ski areas. In case you haven't heard, there are new owners at Burke ski area and it looks as if it may develop into a real "destination ski area" after all these years. Burke has always been a great place to ski - at least the locals have always thought so. It never seemed to quite catch on and become another Stowe or Jay Peak or Killington. Lots of people are hoping this is the turn-around for the area, at long last. What Burke and the Northeast Kingdom in general need is passenger rail service reinstated from Boston and Montreal to make it easy for vacationing skiers to get here from there!
