There is still a lot of slushy ice on the pond - but it just wasn't strong enough to hold up under the weight of the block. We might say "it dropped like a rock." It is much less nerve wracking to have it go cleanly like that rather than have it drift around on an ice floe. As always, it's when the clock stops that counts.
