 ******************

Just a quick note - in case anyone missed my meandering blog entries for the past week or more - Diane Rossi and I took a few days to go to Maine. We were fortunate to have increasingly good weather as we moved eastward on the way over, and by the time we got to the shore, the sun was out, it was warm, and we enjoyed a seafood lunch at Billy's Chowder House in Wells, Maine. Later we sipped complimentary champagne on the lawn in front of our hotel in York, soaking up sunshine and watching the surf. So nice. Taking a "selfie" while holding champagne glasses is not easy, but we got it done, with a little cooperative planning (she held the camera, I pushed the button.) At our age, fingers no longer work that well - I can never manage using my thumbs for texting . . .

Our whole trip seemed to just fall into place - we got where we wanted to go easily, including another nice  (lobster) lunch at Petey's Seafood in Rye, NH,.a great place to eat and a nice drive, mostly along the shore and through small villages. We made it easily through Portsmouth, which can sometimes be a real headache, and managed to avoid interstate roads the whole trip. There weren't too many crowds, there were lots of flowers blooming, and even the rain held off for us until the day we returned (photo at right). Even then, we left in a downpour but the weather got increasingly better as we moved through NH and by the time we got to Vermont, the sun was out. Even when we got off our intended "trail" it turned out to be a happy surprise and we ended up doing something or seeing something we hadn't expected.

It was very relaxing and a great trip and I really enjoyed the great seafood, chowders, salt air, and familiar places. However, back home, I woke up Sunday morning with a scratchy throat and that progressed into a really nasty cold. Fortunately, Diane is ok. I have no idea how or where I picked it up, and I'm definitely not over it, still coughing and feeling lifeless. I have barely looked at my computer until today, and have not had the energy to do any of the warm weather stuff I would normally do on these nice days.I've spent lots of time on my porch, but I'm not sure how beneficial that is - the pollen is thick this spring, and seems to saturate everything! I'm told black flies are already here, but I haven't been outside enough to be bothered with them. I'm looking forward to apple blossoms - they seem to be everywhere except at Joe's Pond.

I don't want to forget to mention that Gretchen Farnsworth let me know the loons have arrived and are nesting on the platform in their cove. She said she doesn't know if there is a pair in the middle and first ponds, but Jim has put signs up to warn people away from the nest in the big pond, so we'll hope at least one chick is hatched and can survive this summer. No word yet whether the loons' worst threat, the bald eagle is here, but I'll try to keep you posted.

Enjoy the lovely weather, be well, and I hope to see you at our spring meeting on the 24th.
